By the numbers
On The Bachelorette yesterday, the average height of the guys was a little under 6'1 (72.78 inches), and the 15 out of 25 that made it past round 1 were about that height too (72.83 inches). Trista, the bachelorette is 5'2. No bachelor was under 5'11 or above 6'3 & 1/2.

Good to know I'm about the perfect height (6'1 and 3/4") heh. Posted by: David at January 9, 2003 04:57 PMSorry to use this method to communicate. Since you moved to your new site your blog does not load in my fully patched IE browser running on fully patched WinXP. I suspect there is some critical scripting error. Shame, I liked visiting... Posted by: misanthropyst at January 9, 2003 05:58 PMThis chick is a peds physical therapist at a Miami Hospital. You cannot tell me she can't meet WEALTHY and ATTRACTIVE DOCTORS in her position- with her obvious All- American blonde looks. My guess is she, like so many American men and women nowadays, is PICKY as hell. I guarantee you she's been hit on more times a day than some women during a month. Oh well (sigh)... Right or wrong, this mentality is a big reason why birth rates are plummeting in the Western World. Posted by: -R at January 9, 2003 06:15 PM-R, Maybe she doesn't like wimpy Doctors. You notice that most of the men she picked were in Sales or Brokers or Firefighters or Professional Sportsmen -- ie, more masculine professions. Then again, that's pretty much all she had to pick from, too. I wonder if she was allowed to define the parameters of the men she liked or if ABC did it on their own? Posted by: Jeff at January 9, 2003 07:51 PMWoo Hoo. 5'11&1/2". Where is all the girlies at? Posted by: Whackadoodle at January 9, 2003 08:19 PMJeff: Besides Trista seemed to go for the money in the first Bachelor- like all the other women. The second Bachelor too for that matter. But, you raise an interesting point, money versus other superficial attributes (looks, height, bod...) where women are concerned. Note, I am not necessarily trying to diss women here- guys also go for superficial attributes too- but we generally care less about how much a woman makes. Shame, I liked visiting..." i've checked out this site on WinXP and exp 6.0...perhaps the patches fixed something, i don't know. i try to make sure everything is XTMLized, but i know it isn't Posted by: razib at January 9, 2003 08:49 PMalmost all the white men have blue eyes. more than the general population of white men. do women really prefer blue eyes that much? a lot of the men are like 6-2 and 185. that's kind of skinny. a guy at 6-2 should be 200. (sarcasm) as steve sailer (and others, including ed miller of the university of new orelands) have hinted at-sexual selection by the female might operate differently in various races. rushton's rule applies to male size-black men are larger, with deeper voices and more well defined muscle tone, asian men are smaller and have more subcutaneous fat. whites in the middle. different strokes as they say. if women universally like larger men, why are some groups smaller? as we've talked about, adaptive issues come into play (pygmies don't have access to concentrated protein sources often), but there could be some more complex sexual selection going on. what i'm hinting at is the cads vs. dads hypothesis-women like different type of men for different reasons, cads to get them pregnant, and dads to raise those very kids. usually it doesn't work out that way, but in the ideal world for women.... Posted by: razib at January 10, 2003 05:20 AMI don't think its clear the extent which trista values money. With the exception, of a couple chubby/freaky guys, I think all the men were solid enough in height, build, looks that the difference really did not matter. I think you have to include thresholds into the analysis. Second, I think someone from an elite technical school (MIT, Caltech) would have at least one advantage, lots of practice competing with 25 other guys for the one attractive girl in the room. Posted by: -b at January 10, 2003 06:19 AMdidn't you mean to say the one semi-ugly girl in the room "b" :)? Posted by: razib at January 10, 2003 06:25 AMHey, I'm close to 6'2" and weigh about 180 lbs. I'm perfect then. *hah* Yeah, i used to weigh about 190 when i was sprinting in college, but I can't maintain that weight these days without lifting for 3 hours/day. David Posted by: David at January 10, 2003 10:48 AMI'm 6'-4" and I think that's a little too tall. Unless you are particularly coordinated, at that height you tend to look gawky and clumsy. (Also, it's hard to get clothes off the rack that really fit). For example, George H.W. Bush was an excellent multi-sport athlete (a fine fielding left handed first baseman at Yale), but at 6-3" he looked awkward. I suspect the best height for a man in our society is around Reagan's height of 6'-1.5". He wasn't half the athlete Bush was, but he looked better. Posted by: Steve Sailer at January 10, 2003 02:06 PMReagan 6' 1.5"? Are you sure? My dad (6'2", same as me) once shared a podium with him at a commencement ceremony. I have a picture - Dad towered over him. People do tend to shrink with age, but that much? (I distinctly remember, seeing the pciture, being surprised at how short RR was...) Posted by: jimbo at January 10, 2003 05:44 PMReagan could very well have shrunk. I have an Uncle who's shrunk more than an inch, and an Aunt who's shrunk 2 inches. It's funny, Reagan does seem "tall" where he was 6'1.5" or closer to 6', but W. Bush looks short --but is 6' even. I think wearing the right suit goes a long way. W. Bush's suits look a size or two too small, where we know Reagan always had custom tailored suits and shirts to help make his proportions "better," particularly his short neck. Posted by: Jeff at January 11, 2003 11:04 AMW's 6' tall ??? Bush is no more than 5'10" or I'm Shaquille O'Neal. David Posted by: David at January 11, 2003 01:55 PMin fact, i heard this as a contrast with gore, who was 6ish, shorter candidates tend to lose. i was neutral in that race, but tended to support bush becaues he's my height :) Posted by: razib at January 11, 2003 04:03 PMConflicting info on Bush's height (not surprising). In this article, Gore was stated to be 6'1" and Bush said to be 3 inches short, putting him at 5'10": Yet, this AP story puts him at 6' feet: http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/020128/6/hyli.html I believe the lower number is closer to the truth, though I believe I've heard the 6' number in another story (maybe Bob Woodward's 9/11 WaPo series). Posted by: Jeff at January 11, 2003 07:44 PMI heard George W Bush was 5'11". If women prefer large men why aren't all the hollywood heart throbs fomer linemen? In australia, there is this sport called Aussie Rules. The players average 6'1" 185lbs, women love watching this game, i think that women like guys a bit above average height with lean athletic builds. I read taht most american women prefer men to be between 6' and 6'2". Some survery found that when men where asked about how much muscle they'd ideally have, they picked to be 30lbs heavier then most women found ideally attractive. Most bachelors have blue eyes? Maybe the Bachelorettes father had blue eyes, ppl tend to be attracted to the eye color of their opposite sex parent. Posted by: Simon at February 23, 2003 04:38 PMYou people are so ignorant it's not even funny My parents immigarated from Germany my whole family is prodominately white most of us have brown eyes some of my cousins have green eyes and my brother has hazel eyes but nobody has blue eye color alone can't determine how attractive somebody is neither can height some of the biggest names in hollywood are short Tom Cruise Al Pacino even Irish hearthrob Colin Farrell stands at only 5'9'' (he has brown eyes to) Trista likes tall men hey that's her call they're alot attractive girls out there who can look past things like height and are willing to settle for a man who isn't a foot taller then her
