“Republicans who smoke pot”

Julian Sanchez of Reason makes the case that libertarians should not be reflexive Republicans. I should note that I went to a CATO event this spring where Fareed Zakaria gave a talk based on his book Future of Freedom. Most of the people there were obviously known Republicans (columnists like John Fund or Deroy Murdock) or expressed rhetoric that was more Republican than Democratic if it had any party tilt.

  1. Kind of a recent shift, at least for me. For a long time I bought into the Republicans as the party of fiscal prudence (so my voting priorities were typically Libertarian->Republican->Democrat), but with recent changes they are now even worse than the Democrats when it comes to spending money. Ergo, I now order my voting L->D->R. Of course this normally only matters if there is no Libertarian in the race.
