WordPerfect still couldn't do a decent WYSIWYG interface by v.6.0, and was even buggier than Word.

i can attest to the buggy part.

The battle between WordPerfect and MS Word is set out (from an MS-insider's point of view) in
'Let's talk about Word'. Fascinating.

I was one of those old PC magazine reviewers mentioned in this piece and was a master user of WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS. In the early days of Windows 3.0/3.1, Ami Pro (especially v.3.0) was a much better product that Word. But Lotus bought Ami Pro and rewrote it from scratch into a slow dog called WordPro (I think). WordPerfect still couldn't do a decent WYSIWYG interface by v.6.0, and was even buggier than Word.
No wonder Word prevailed.

Not a chance that Word was written in VB. Wordperfect could have been written in qbasic, however. I’m suprised anyone would want to optomize cowpie.

Regarding literate offspring of illiterates, so was my grandmother…Sailer recently critiqued Kay Hymowitz’ otherwise admirable article about the crisis of the black underclass, saying it put too much emphasis on “middle-class parenting.” I agree. You just need a good enough parent.
