Dar al-Harb
This is a post I’ve been meaning to write for a little over a year, which the obligations of the physical world have kept me from, but Razib’s recent series on the Hui has finally given me an excuse.
Many of the Muslim immigrants to China were Central Asian mercenaries who settled in China rather than make the arduous journey home. In pre-modern China (and other pre-modern societies), men are expected to pursue the same line of work as their forebears. This, along with the Confucian Han disdain for military careers, meant that the descendants of these men found their niche in the Chinese economy as soldiers, mercenaries, and caravan guards.1 And in China, mercenary families, whether Han or Hui, were famous for their Kung Fu.
If its traditions are to be believed, the Cha Chüan (查拳; pinyin: ChÄquán) style of Kung Fu has its origins in the Tang Dynasty (618–907) and the recuperation of Hua Zongqi, a young Hui general, in the county of Guanxian in Shandong Province.3 As thanks for their care, he stayed to teach the townspeople martial arts.
The same scenario figures in the origin story of Tan Tui (彈腿; pinyin: Tán TuÇ): the invalid soldier, the kind townspeople, the reciprocation of hospitality by teaching Kung Fu, even Guanxian County, Shandong. The origin of Tan Tui is set towards the end of the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) and attributed to a Hui from Xinjiang named Chashangyir. It is improbable that such a particular sequence of events repeat itself in the same location a thousand years after they first took place. However, a Han Dynasty (202 BCE–220 CE) vase in the collection of the Museum of Metropolitan art features the figure of a wolf-headed man, a totem of the non-Han peoples of Xinjiang, in an unmistakably Tan Tui posture as he fights a mounted Han archer. So the link to Xinjiang may have substance even if little else in the origin story does.
The people of Guanxian eventually taught Tan Tui to the Buddhist monks of the Longtan Temple, who expanded the original 10 routines of Tan Tui into 12.
Even though it is sometimes taught as a style on its own, both the 10- and 12-routine Tan Tui are best-known because their adoption into the curriculum of other styles, starting with Cha Chüan and especially through the widespread impact of the Jing Wu Men (of Fist of Fury fame) and the Nanjing Central National Martial Arts Institute.
In the neighboring province of Hebei is the village of Meng in the prefecture of Cangzhou. In Meng Village during the 18th century a Muslim named Wu Jong began teaching the martial arts he learned from a Taoist monk (or monks, depending on the account), which became known as Ba Ji Chüan (八極拳; pinyin: BÄjÃquán). In the 20th century, the bodyguards of Emperor Puyi (of Last Emperor fame), Mao Zedong, and Chiang Kai-Shek were all practitioners of Ba Ji.
In one of his posts, Razib linked to a Time magazine article about Han-Hui violence in Henan, which lies immediately south of Hebei, in the prefecture of Zhengzhou, where the Shaolin Monastery is located. 60 miles west of the Shaolin Monastery is the ancient city of Luoyang, home to a Muslim community known for a branch of the martial art Xing Yi Chüan (å½¢æ„æ‹³; pinyin: XÃngyìquán). The founder of this branch, Ma Xueli, is said to have learned the style from a wandering master in the 18th century. His family is rumored to have been involved in the martial arts for much longer. The teacher of the 13th century master Bai Yufeng is said to have been a man named Ma from Luoyang.
In the 20th century, Cangzhou was the home of the Hui master Wang Ziping (1883–1973); bio en español with lots of photos here, shorter bio in English here, photo of Wang Ziping as an old man doing a bent press with a lock weight here), a master of many styles but best known for Cha Chüan. Gender equity in the Chinese umma isn’t limited to female imams; Wang Ziping passed the mantle to his daughter Wang Jurong, who passed it on to her daughters Helen and Grace Wu. (Wu Jong’s lineage was also continued by his daughter, Wu Rong.)
Another celebrated Hui Kung Fu master from Hebei was Ch’ang Tung-Sheng, the 20th century master of Shuai Jiao, Chinese wrestling, specifically the style from Baoding in Hebei. He was famous for his ability to drop opponents with his first technique, which is the ideal espoused by the Baoding style, as well as the Hebei style of Xing Yi.
The border region between Shandong and Hebei has long been famous for the martial arts among both Han and Hui, especially Cangzhou. Cangzhou was a penal colony, a place of exile, a really rough part of China where knowledge of the martial arts were necessary for survival.

ethnic specialization in martial disciplines can be found in many cultures. in guyana, the population is about 50% indian but 90%+ of the army is of african (or african identified) origin. similar in trinidad, while in fiji the army is almost exclusively native fijian though about half the population is indo-fijian.

the overwhelming majority of people who went overseas to places like guyana and trinidad were indentured as laborers. they were not the high and mighty. the situation in mauritius and fiji is more complicated, groups of gujarati traders and such went to these places because they were near enough to their mercantile networks to be feasible outposts (especially mauritius). the peasants were mostly recruited from the extremely poor areas of eastern uttar pradesh and bihar, some of them even pressed or tricked into indenturdom.
but note that even in india, at least prepartition, it wasn’t kshatriyas as much as sikhs and muslims who dominated the army. just as very few brahmins are priests very few kshatriyas are warriors (some groups, like marathas, became kshatriyas through victory in war, just like many of the rajput clans). some orthodox hindu brahmins assert that the end of the world is at hand because india has no real kshatriyas to govern it (all the kshatriyas being “newly” created groups who took power after the fall of the original kingly and warrior castes).
My compliments on a highly informative post Jeet. I live in Shanghai, and occasionally take classes with a local xing yi master of Hui extraction.
He’s quite a character – he converted most of the remaining floor space of his dilapidated gym building into gambling rooms, and seems to spend most of the revenue generated by the clatter of mahjong tiles on noxious bai jiu. He just sits in the gym and drinks all day, chatting to his cronies, and occasionally dispensing instruction to students when he feels so inclined.
A couple of friends of mine – one of them a former professional kick boxer – were originally quite dismissive of his abilities, and basically regarded him as alcoholic braggart. Then one day, when the mood caught him, he provided us with the most amazing demonstration of his physical prowess.
He knew all these pressure point holds which he employed in tandem with each other, to completely incapacitate his opponent and induce crippling levels of agony. You would expect pressure point holds to be quite difficult to deploy, since it must take a while to ascertain the precise notch of heightened vulnerability. But this guy can just tap your shoulder, elbow, or hand, and already he’s found it.
He was also capable of moving with the most remarkable speed and precision. He knew an amazing array of locks, throws and chokes, and managed to thwart the moves of the former kickboxer with effortless, voluble grace.
Of course, he later confided to me that he would never impart his knowledge to a foreigner – or, I suspect, a non-Hui. According to him, the Hui were compelled to cultivate their high level proficiency in the martial arts by the hostility of the surrounding Han population.
I can understand his rationale. If I possessed his knowledge (and here’s hoping that my regular donations of imported French wine will soon induce greater candour and trust), I would be loathe to impart it to anyone but my closest and most trusted associates. He can kill with his bare hands for chrissake.
My xing yi teacher also looks quite Middle Eastern, with a prominent nose, crinkled hair, and a hirsute torso. When he’s feeling louche and saucy, he loves to cultivate a thick beard and moustache.

I take it your teacher practices the Ma Xueli lineage of Xing Yi from Henan.

He seems to enjoy quite a high level of renown – the walls of his squalid little gym are covered with newspaper articles on either him or his brother.
According to some of the articles I read, Xing Yi was originally devised by the Southern Song general Yue Fei (one of China’s most revered patriotic heroes). It is claimed that he applied his spear-fighting methods to unarmed combat. Then at some point during the past 800 years, the tradition became dominated by Hui Chinese.
I’ve heard that this is all apochryphal, however.
As far as I know, it’s the Ma Xueli lineage of Xing Yi from Henan which is associated with Hui Chinese.
And, before Ma Xueli and Dai Longbang, who were 17th century contemporaries, it’s all apocryphal.
Here’s what I’ve heard: Xing Yi has its roots in the 6th century Shaolin style of Xinyiba, which Yue Fei’s teacher Zhou Tong learned and eventually made its way into the lineages of Ma Xueli and Dai Longbang.
