I?ve had several friends who got PhD?s in experimental particle physics. It is a tough path. The experiments take many years and involve large teams. Most of the measurement equipment was specialized and was designed and built using graduate student labor. The professors in charge of the project would peel out a small piece and allocate it to the PhD candidate for his thesis. At my university it took an average of 8 years of postgraduate work to get the doctorate (compared to three and half years for a computer science PhD and five years for mathematics PhD). The lab director?s name would be listed as a main author on all papers that came from the lab. In the lab with which I am familiar this was fair since the lab director followed all projects closely and made valuable contributions.
Do you happen to know the paragraph:author ratio?
This is an eye-opener. Did they all get to review the draft and make comments?
