Illegal Immigration – The Hard (and Cold) Way
If you’re a Romanian who wants to get into Canada, but you’re already on their watch lists because they’ve deported you before and intercepted you on your other attempts to enter the country illegally, what to do? Why that’s simple, flank the enemy and make your run for the weakest border front, so buy an airline ticket to Greenland, buy an 18 ft. fiberglass boat and cross the daunting sea to make landfall on the frozen tundra of the Canadian High North:
It’s hard to slip under the radar in a tightly-knit community of less than 200, and as the Romanian emerged from a thick fog onto the shores of Grise Fiord, he was met by a welcoming party of curious Inuit. Wet from the journey, with no food and only 20 litres of fuel remaining, the Romanian was nonetheless freshly shaved and eager to sell his boat to raise money for his airfare south.
Those who met him offered to take the man, whose name has not been released, to the local Co-op store to buy food.
On the way, they happened to run into RCMP Const. Ian Johnson, and the Romanian’s scheme crumbled.
Ah, the Mounties get their man, even in the desolate frozen tundra. See maps here.

even in the desolate frozen tundra.
dude, that’s the whole fucking cuntry of kanada.
I think that it is the only possible way for east european people to go to Canada at the present moment :)
This is really funny – just now some Canadian politician said that they definitely have to increase immigration and for this purpose he wants to extend family joining not only to one’s dependent children and parents, but also siblings (they aren’t probably audacious enough to include aunts, third cousins and a neighbor’s dog). So how’s possible, that such Romanians have to resort to paddling from Groenland?
Let the politicians talk, telling lies is their job :) the fact is that Canada doesn’t give visas to potential immigrants. I saw how they refused visas to people having families in Canada and to young people wanting to study there. From the Canadian Embassy in Bucharest only 2% or 3% from the applicants get visas.
After reading this one, I’m reminded of those Cuban refugees who converted an old truck into a boat and almost made it to Florida.
However you feel about immigrants, you gotta grant that if you have the sheer stones and wits to do something like turn a truck into a boat or sail from Greenland to Northern Canada just so you can work as a janitor or gardener, you’re probably well above the cut of the average unskilled illegal immigrant.
“A” for effort and creativity! Canada ought to welcome him with open arms.
Most of Canada’s immigrants are “chain” immigrants, who’s family in Canada hire immigration lawyers, a truly corrupt mess. And plenty of refugees as well. 10 years ago things were more along the line of a meritocracy, selecting for more desireable immigrants based on “points”, but as these systems age they become more regularly exploited.
Most of Canada’s immigrants are not “chain migrants”. 60% are economic class immigrants and their dependents, 25% are family class (“chain migrants”), 13% are refugees.
Romania is the number 11 source of immigrants to Canada (around 5K a year) and the third highest country in Europe (after UK and France). Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Bosnia have all been significant source countries in recent years. That said, I’m sure it is hard to get a visa.
