I noticed a post at Crooked Timber about something called The Academic Blog Portal. It’s a wiki. Both Gene Expressions are listed in the biology section. It is interesting to compare the representation of different disciplines, there are, for example, more linguistics and philosophy blogs than biology blogs, but also, more history blogs. Not all fields are represented to their proportion in academia, for example, only 4 engineering blogs.

  1. lol @ the ethnicity figures

  2. Looking at the URLs for “sites with similar readership,” I think I know how this website pays its bills–about half of them look like they are porno sites. (I’m at work, so I didn’t follow those links. But look at the domain names.)

  3. Ha! I complained about this to a friend of mine, a humanities academician, and was told, in all seriousness, that very few science and engineering types were smart enough to run a blog.

I rather think it’s a problem with specialization. Most of the humanities type blogs cover subjects of interest to the general public. The top science blogs do as well. Would PZ be so popular if he restricted his writing to biology?

the top humanities people are prolly more comfortable in terms of verbal exposition that is digestable for the lay audience. but, content matters. even within the sciences, biology trumps physics because of the content, and the physics blogs seem to tilt strongly toward cosmology, as opposed to say solid state stuff.

Most likely he meant smart in this sense:

Fashionable; elegant: a smart suit; a smart restaurant; the smart set. See synonyms at fashionable.
