Richard Dawkins is retiring from his position at Oxford. They are now looking for someone to fill the spot as Charles Simonyi Professorship in the Public Understanding of Science. I nominate Armand Leroi. He’s young, charismatic, and a very engaging writer.

  1. In spite of my background in Physical Science, I hope they go for a Bio man. Fundamental physics has been stuck for 40 years, and “big picture” physics strikes me as being largely untestable waffle. Whereas bioscience – especially the sort of thing that interests you laddies here – is abuzz. Now then, how about the woman psychologist that you chaps mention sometimes – Linda something. She’s got balls. But could she afford to live in Oxford on a British salary?

  2. Gottfredson?

  3. Balls, yes she does have: two pairs…

  4. Thank you, Tensor: the very same.

  5. Unfortunately, in light of what has recently happened to James Watson, both Leroi and Gottfredson, while excellent choices from the point of view of promoting the understanding of science, have been too forthright in stating their positions on race to survive the scrutiny of the PC police. Also, given how wacky Britain is becomming with its anti-hate speech laws (a lot different than it even was when I lived there in the late 1990s) both may even be subject to legal sanction for their opinions.
