Education & money

  • At first I though it was somewhat strange that you would link to Harris's book. Considering that the thesis of the book is the importance of peer groups I would think this would be one of the few influencial things parents could do. It says in the article though, that they hanged out with the same people either way so maybe that was controlled for. In that case though I wonder if there would be a larger (a) effect for minorities who would have tendency to hang out with people in their own ethnicity. Are there any studies that look at this?

Of course I do find it amusing that people who proclaim an inteterest in child development don't seem to know much on behaviorial genetics.
  • Post-Modernism and Stuff White People Like

  • Keith there is a stuff educated black people like: http://www.stuffebplike.com/ There is also one for iranians, browns and jews.
  • Blood group maps

  • The article notes, but not the graphics themselves, note that this refers to native populations. I was awfully puzzled about how North America could be so different from Europe until I clicked through.
  • No sympathy for statistics

  • This is not surprising. I can remember a couple of articles in the Economist the last few years detailing studies suggesting that fear of being ripped off is a big limit on altruistic behavior. If I see a face I think I can sense whether he's needy or not. Throw in some statistics and I have an intuitive sense that there are some cons hiding in the numbers. We'd much rather not be made fools than help people.
  • Foreskin: hot or not?

  • I've seen at least three big blog comment wars by women over cut vs. uncut. Each was roughly tied, as have been the (few) opinions I've gathered from women I know. I think Slate even covered this issue in the last year or so and solicited opinions.
  • Naked Apes?

  • Why do you assume "trapped" odors shouldn't be smelled? It's as like to be "trapped" for enhancement of pheromes. Given regular bathing many women, at least, like the "clean" concentrated smells from these areas.
