General Social Survey participants (N = 14,964) were asked if life is exciting, routine, or dull. Of those who answered 0 out of 10 on a vocab test, 38.2% said that life is exciting. Of those who answered 10 for 10, 61.3% answered the same. Big difference.

I've seen evidence that young evangelical Christians are more moderate than their parents. Of course, these generational differences could be due to an age effect. There are some of us who were secular/liberal in our 20s and turned religious/grumpy as life began to kick us in the ass.

I used to feel the same way; depressed at demographic decline. Now I take solace in the fact that the people who are looking down their noses at us are evolutionary dead ends.

This analysis is so good, I hate to mess with it, but since the rape data are based on police reports, the trends reflects reporting rates (and other things) and rape is a notoriously underreported crime (estimates I've seen indicate that 10-30% of them are reported).  
 
The National Crime Victimization Survey is a huge representative sample of the U.S. population 12 and older. It shows that rape has been declining since the early 70s, with a steeper decline after 1990. 
 
Maybe the changing culture and those shelters opened in the early 70s convinced more and more women to report the crime, producing the big increase in reported crimes that lasted until the early 90s.

Re: Peruvians, it's from a post measuring immigrant performance by six factors: % using one or more welfare programs, % self-employed, % without health insurance, % with less than a high school education, % with a bachelor's and beyond, and the % in poverty. Peruvians came out second among Latin American immigrants, behind only Colombia. 
 
My results are similar for the educational attainment of Hispanic Americans: Peruvians were 4th out of 21 groups--only Argentineans, Chileans, and Venezuelans were higher.

Any takers on the bet that Asian-Ams in colder states will be smarter than those in hotter states? 
 
Based on GSS: The sample of Asians is small, so I combined seven regions into "North" and "South" (but left the Mountain and Pacific regions out since they range north to south). Combining Chinese- and Japanese-Americans born here, the North mean IQ is 103.8; the South is 98.0 (N = 18). To beef up the sorry N a bit I added in Filipinos: North mean becomes 101.0, and the South becomes 96.8. N is still only 25.

One simple explanation for the 1960-1992 crime wave was all the Baby Boomers (born 1946-64) in crime-prone ages. The oldest ones hit their teens around 1960, while the youngest ones would have been 28 in 1992. 
 
One strange trend has been a big increase in gang members over the past 15 years as crime has decreased. Perhaps it's become all pose and ho's.

On the issue of growth, Mormons have been roughly 2% of the U.S. population for the longest time. It's doubtful that the group's share will increase much, unless the population growth of non-Mormons disappears or goes negative.  
 
Also, no one has mentioned that Hispanics are a large and growing segment of the church. If trends continue, there will be a smaller white membership, disproportionately in leadership roles, and a larger, assimilating Latino membership. 
 
I visited Salt Lake Community College recently and was amazed at how diverse the student population is. My guess is that Mormon converts from all over the world want to study in Utah. (Some of it might also be due to the Mormon embrace of multiculturalism). The image of weird WASPs is rapidly becoming outdated.

Frequently, children can only qualify for programs if they have a diagnosis of autism, so doctors will give a kid with very mild symptoms the label so he can get speech therapy at school, for example.
