    What's not scientific about it?

  • Btw, Orson Welles was dead wrong. The Cuckoo clock was German and Switzerland has been innovative throughout history, while Italy lagged since the Renaissance. (Not that they did a bad job either..)

This is what they did accomplish:

"the tax revolt, direct democracy and more wealth than any other country ever had? For example the pencil, the newspaper, the first branded article, the electric telegraph, the clock-factory, the internal combustion engine, the Swiss army knife, playing cards, the cartoon, contact lenses, vivisection, organ transplantation, the Red Cross - and Absinthe."

    Not bad at all.
  • Hey Razib

You should check out this guy, Michael Blume.
    http://www.blume-religionswissenschaft.de/english/index_english.html

He did a lot of study on religion, fertility et al in Germanic countries. Just figured, you'd might like to know.

"Lots of the really high IQ people have been dangerous to the cause of liberty."

    Why is that?

Is it because they're so smart that they don't trust the rest of us less smart people with control or something? The far-right Bell Curvers have often been statists.

How important do you think that hormones are when it comes to human behaviour, is it really just IQ & hormones?

    Pardon me for the error.
  • @Razib

I read Ng Aik Kwang's book "Why are Asians less creative than Westerners", but it was a bit disappointed. I just hinted to the fact that Asians lived in more conformistic societies -- duh..

It was all nurture (culture), no nature at all. Are there any better books around, which focus on this topic? More focused to the interaction between nurture and nature, because it seems like an obvious riddle for mankind.

Imagine what progress and miracles the 1,5 billion East Asians could accomplish, if their creative potential was unlocked.
  • French more fecund than the Irish?

  • @roissy

Germany is a special case in Europe, but that will change. Germans are very good organizers and obedient, so pro-natalist policies could very well work for them.

    1) The lowest-low fertility of East-Germany after the fall of the wall and an emigration of talented young German women to the West, leaving the German men there alone.

    2) Until very recently pro-natalist policies were equated with neo-fascism in Germany. You know, H*tl*r also pushed pro-natalist, ergo pro-natalist are..
  • I think this is great news, also for muslim-European relations.

Most anti-muslim sentiment in Europe is rooted in the fear tha muslims will take over someday. If European populations start to stabilise (or even grow) and Muslim populations adopt to the European norm, that will greatly increase trust and understanding.

I'm however interested how this sudden surge of French is explained. Are births increasing throughout the entire French population, or just in certain groups, i.e. orthodox Catholics, Basques, people from non-Urban areas?

(I'm not talking about immigrant groups, so I'm not living up to Agnostic's challenge. ;))

  • Were there any differences in the partner selection between Askenazi Jews and gentile Europeans in medieval Eastern Europe? Maybe the selection wasn't through romantic love, but some kind of pre-arranged marriage. Maybe it was the parents who decided who was a good partner and who wasn't.

If I'd choose a partner for my son or daughter, I'd use reason alone in partner selection. Top of my list would be wealth and good manners. Stuff like that correlate with IQ, is it not?

  • Everyone who's opinion I respect votes Ron Paul or prefers him. Everyone.

Those who disliked him, I've disliked a long time myself. They usually prefer Giuliani, McCain, Hillary and Obama. Precisely the people who would completely ruin the US if given the chance.

Romney may be the least of all these evils, but he's got no chance in hell -- never did, never will.

It's truly mind-boggling that after 20 years of Bushes and Clintons Americans seem to rally behind a new Clinton and the outbushing-Bush, invade/invite-the-world-McCainiac.

Either way, the US is f...ed
