I know this is not what you meant, dr Howard, but the only example of a rare language functioning as a survival net that I can think of was the use of the word "amkha" (Hebrew for "your/our people"), which European Jews used during the holocaust to confirm each other's identity as Jews without being overheard/understood by others.
