Why are Mormons the American success story?
thorfinn, do you read? i put my criteria below. thanks for being my OED btw.
Lactase persistence, pastoralism in Africa, don’t know in Europe
You actually can farm grain above the arctic circle in Europe if you're really really stubborn. Certain of my ancestors did this at 69 and a third degrees north.
A live birth is hard to do
Well, presumably the individuals wouldn't normally be severely mosaic for serious chromosomal abnormalities because the normal cells would outcompete the abnormal ones. If you cut an early stage embryo in two, you can get two babies, after all. Perhaps the embryo can adapt to "not dividing/expressing properly" cells just as well as it can adapt to missing cells.
Genetics of Cape Coloureds
Don't forget the Malagasy, next door, have a native Indonesian element.
Abortion and the effect of Catholicism and nationality
Abortion is still certainly something objectionable, in Jewish law. The issue is that the mother's life takes absolute priority (until the head comes out, then they're coequal). Catholic theology defaults more towards "save the baby" because of baptism, etc. There's been some quibbling about very early abortions in both traditions, admittedly.
I think Islam may theoretically be more friendly than the others, but I'm not sure.

Mmm. Just because the Church sometimes turned a blind eye to abortion when the mother's life was in danger, doesn't mean it was ever considered allowable. I'm minded of one of the apocryphal gospels, that features mothers who abort their children in hell being tormented by their aborted babies with...laser beam eyes or something, I don't remember precisely. While not -canonical-, a good look at popular opinion. The church fathers spoke against it. A lot of those instruments were meant to be used at a very late stage in unsuccessful labor, when the fetus was likely already dead. Labor sometimes stretched for many many days.
Now, Jewish law is interesting in that it religiously requires abortion when the mother's life is in peril.

Your generation was more into sexualizing young girls
Just because pornographic materials were more undercover doesn't mean they were any less "depraved". Look up Tijuana bibles sometime for a taste of what the people of the 1920s-1950s were looking at/passing around under the school desks ;)
Playboy replaced them, and was a lot less explicit - but only because it wasn't black market.
As the stuff became legal, it adhered to community standards more, so it ended up tamer.

Origins of the British
pconroy: Yes, but slow-mutating is relative (half the family groups in my surname project include at least one mutation on those 6 markers over less than 500 years), and in any case there's not enough markers to make any reliable conclusion about prehistory. False convergence and divergence are more likely than not.
Didn't you read about that Florida accountant Sykes mistakenly identified as a descendant of Genghis Khan when he really belonged to a not unusual European haplogroup(R1a) that diverged something like fifty thousand years ago from the haplogroup containing Khan(C3)?
Sykes, incidentally, uses nearly twice as many markers as Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer's resolution is even crappier than that.

The issue is that Oppenheimer uses 6 Y-STR markers, which is completely inadequate for anything, particularly in Western Europe (the land of R1b1c). Of course Brits look like Spaniards at that resolution.
Now, at 10 times that many, you get a better picture.

Oppenheimer uses extremely limited haplotypes for his work and draws very broad conclusions from them. I wouldn't take it too seriously.
Economic history is so clean
The problem is, people cannot be globalized and maintain -any- quality of life. People are territorial. Moving is -traumatic-. If you're working six months in Germany and then have to spend a month and a half in Bangladesh, while your wife is spending 2 years in Darfur, what the hell kind of life is that?
It's one of the great failings of modern society is that it is chipping away at being able to settle down in one place, put down roots, and raise a family.
