“Blonde like me”

  • It's true of other blacks as well. I grew up with the Wesorts of Southern Maryland. They were of mixed race: black, American Indian and white. One of them was the principal of a local, public elementary school. He wouldn't let his daughter date a black man from D.C.! Mind you, the Wesorts were poor or middle class for the most part.

Ditto for the black Creole from Louisiana who I used to work with. Her grandmother didn't want her blonde, blue-eyed cousin dating a black man.

  • Demographic realities

  • Asians benefit from affirmative action. They are no different than blacks or Mexicans. However, it's not in the realm of colleges and universities. Rather, they can become "preferred" minority providers to Fortune 500 companies and the federal government just like blacks and Mexicans. And they too can borrow money from financial institutions at sweetheart interest rates, thanks to the Community Reinvestment Act.

BTW, why is it never mentioned that almost all colleges and universities in the U.S. were founded and funded by whites, other than a handful of black institutions? Why don't the Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Indians endow a university or two? Instead of Leland Stanford, how about Connie Chung?

  • I was not aware of Asians deriving a "miniscule" benefit from affirmative action. Check out Computer Tech of Houston, Texas. My former employer, a Big Five firm and ardent supporter of "diversity," used this Asian owned firm for computer support. Computer Tech did tens of millions of year in business.

This is just one business out of tens of thousands of Asian owned businesses. Can't any of you bigots do the arithmetic as to how many of these firms might derive benefit from AA?

Moreover, they don't help competing with whites for jobs with the Token 500, but they get it nonetheless.

As for Asians in higher education, I remember well a Korean finance prof I had in grad school. I tangled with him a few times over finance. Found out later that all the Korean grad students in the class received A's, yet not one of the whites did. (I know this as I was an undergraduate advisor, and so had access to the computer system used for grading.) I found this extremely biased. Didn't matter as he was ultimately denied tenure. Gee, I wonder why?

  • Affirmative Action (a different kind)

  • Bullshit! California didn't ban affirmative action any more than did Texas. They simply found an end around explicit quotas. Here in Texas minorities receive points for being bilingual, or having a parent whose schooling ended with the fifth grade. Since most Mexicans have, on average, a sixth grade education, you can easily surmise who benefits from this. Ditto for the bilingualism.

  • Brains & beauty

  • Duh! What about making everyone good looking? Razib should come to Dallas, sometime, and see all the hotties, many of whom have been "enhanced" and "augmented." Then there will be no rhetorical sighing!

In my next life I want to be a plastic surgeon in Dallas!

  • Nerds

  • Razib should check out how many of the students have mothers or fathers who are university professors. The two students from Austin reside in the affluent Westlake Hills area across Lake Austin from the city. There's a good chance their fathers are professors at UT Austin, or are techie types. I know this as I lived in Austin for five years in the early 80s. At one point I counted 11 individuals I had worked with whose fathers were profs at UT.

  • More diversity in science

  • Cal Tech is still one of the few universities that actually considers use of standardized tests for admissions to be legitimate.

And, if diversity were such a good idea, how does one explain away the fact that monoracial countries such as Iceland, Taiwan, and Japan are all First World, yet Guatemala, which is about 90% Mayan, is not?

  • Deficit of “g,” not caps

  • I wonder if the all Mexican juries in South Texas are being bought off? Everything else is for sale down south, whether it's drugs, women, or fake IDs, so it wouldn't surprise me if there were some sort of kickbacks going on. Those South Texas counties have long histories of corruption, almost the equal of Louisiana or Chicago.

  • Jungle Fever

  • Razib should take a look at Ethiopian and Eritrean women. There are a number of them here in Dallas (refugees, just like the Kurds, Iraqi soldiers, and a slew of others). They are quite attractive. It's the black American women who, for the most part, are unattractive, as their forebears came from West Africa.

BTW, Duende resides in Washington, D.C. She should look into the Wesorts of Southern Maryland. They are an admixture of black, white and American Indian. Many are whiter than Colin Powell.

  • Quick entry….

  • Jacquelyn,

Why not take an unattended bus trip through the Mideast alone? That way you could meet all the Muslims you'd want.

BTW, be sure to wear something to cover your head and face. They might think you're a Western harlot otherwise.

  • “Market dominant minorities”

  • I had just read the piece when I turned to Gene Expression. All the more reason to forcibly expel illegal aliens from south of the border. As I told my brother some time ago: "They will never make a net positive contribution to this country."

  • R is simply wrong! I went to a birthday cookout for my brother's stepson Saturday afternoon. His wife is Mormon. She has three kids of her own from her first marriage. Her daughter (26) is now pregnant with her first child. Her brother has three kids, all under the age of six. Her first sister has two kids, and the second sister has two as well. The families are happy, and the kids are well adjusted. One of the families from her ward (unit of the Mormon faith) has 14 kids! I met them. All seemed well adjusted, and not one seemed to have any pathologies. In fact, the older children took it upon themselves to look after the younger ones.

  • Now that’s a response

  • Finally a conservative with some balls.

Now why are they all black? I'm speaking of Dr. Walter Williams, Dr. Thomas Sowell, and Ward Connerly? (Yes, I know, Connerly is not a "pure" conservative. Shit, who cares?)

  • Why does Jason use the vile term "Anglo"?

Say that to an Armenian, Basque, Italian, Slav or Greek, much less someone from the Levant (Lebanon), and watch him go ballistic. It's just as ludicrous as calling Mexicans "Hispanics." They are Amerindian or mestizo, other than the wealthy, racist, white elite.

  • Color of Fame

  • Alexis Bedel is probably half-Italian as she is from Argentina. And the Mexican-American part? If she's from El Paso, or parts thereabouts, she is all but white.

Yeah, but she put "Hispanic" on the application.

  • Yeah, well, what about former caudillo Alberto Fujimori of Peru? Isn't he "Hispanic"? And could he not benefit from affirmative action?

    Yep, you betcha.

  • The Spaniards you are looking for in the U.S. reside in places such as Colorado and northern New Mexico. They are the descendants of the Spaniards who founded all the missions. I know this as my brother's roommate is from Santa Fe, and she is Spanish and pueblo Indian.

  • Razib would have a field day in Oklahoma, what with black Seminoles and white Cherokees and Choctaws! Sheesh, a girl I used to work with said that her family had discovered papers that proved she was a Cherokee freedman, yet she had an ass like a black girl's! She had pale white skin, black hair, hazel eyes, and a small number of freckles. But from behind her behind looked like a black girl's!

And let's not get into the Wesorts I grew up with in Southern Maryland. They were black, white and American Indian. Some had kinky blonde hair, thick, full lips, and blue or hazel eyes. And many manifested signs of inbreeding over the generations such as cleft palates. http://www.heite.org/Indians/invisibleindians.html

  • Don’t know no English….

  • Bilingual education costs money. Money is a resource. Resources are ALWAYS in short supply. Why piss away a scarce resource?

BTW, my brother-in-law is a native of Iran, though he is a Turk, and not Persian. He spoke almost no English when he arrived here about a decade ago. He did, however, speak Farsi as well as fluent Italian as he lived in Italy for a few years. Italy is where my sister met him. He is almost fluent in English now. He also worked very hard to earn a B.S. in microbiology from a well respected state school on the East Coast. And this as a middle-aged man!

  • Hix from the Stix & Boyz from the Hood @ Yale

  • Left unmentioned is Balkanization, plus the outright cost to society financially.

As for "Hispanics" making up such a huge portion of the U.S. population, why, that's a Big Lie. There are around 10 million illegal aliens in the U.S. The majority of them are from Central America. Deduct these numbers and the number of "Hispanics" in the U.S. craters.

  • They WILL be deported! I'm actively involved in the immigration restrictionist movement, and I assure you and the others that change is coming much faster than most realize. One telltale sign will be if and when additional attacks occur upon American (sic) soil once the assault on Iraq begins. Once this happens, the open borders crackpots like George Bush will have no choice but to expel illegals and seal the borders.
