Are over-leveraged counties seeing an increase in food stamp usage?

  • @Anthony: Some states process food stamp applications faster than others. So if there's a family that needs food stamps for a couple months in Ohio, their application is usually processed within a couple days.

  • Razib, have you written anything on the Fujianese? They seem to be the dominant group of overseas Chinese in almost every country (Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, the Phillipense, increasingly the USA via Taiwan or directly from China). I wonder if there is something in their culture that makes them more open to emigrating.

It's also interesting that the proto-Austronesians originated in the same region, before colonizing Taiwan and expanding across the Pacific.
  • Whence Canis familiaris?

  • @Razib I apologize. I thought that the graph (since the source was unattributed) was created by p-ter.
  • I suppose I need to spell it out for you both. Although, it's easy to figure it out by looking at the scaling of the original graph.

Best fit line of the African only samples: y=0.063x + 14.619 slope: 0.063
Best fit line of the Asian only samples: y= 0.2493x + 2.8246 slope: 0.2493

What does the slope suggest? It suggests that as the sample size increases, Asian dogs will exhibit more haplogroups compared to the African dogs.

  • Don’t blame Canada

  • The male mortality rates in those areas are probably inflated by the popularity of motorsports, ATVs, dirt bikes, and BMX. Motorsports plus alcohol (as mentioned by other posters) isn't a great combination if you want to live long. I live an area splotched red, and I can't even count the number of spinal injury or head trauma stories that I've heard.
  • The boy trade in China

  • I think you should clairfy your statement on adoption in China. In the past, most adoptions were between relatives or close friends, so they weren't officially recorded. One of my mother's (Taiwanese) siblings was adopted from her uncle.
  • What the frack was that?

  • I did like how they made Hera into Mitochondrial Eve, which finally justifies why she was so important to humanity; although, I think that having an Asian-White Mitochondrial Eve might send some odd racial messages.

If I were African, I might be slightly offended at the assertion that a bunch of White people and some Asians taught the natives how to speak and start civilization.

  • The Cambodians aren't really outliers. In comparison some of the Mongols are just as far away from the Chinese as the Cambodians are.
  • Where have all the Smiths gone?

  • Regarding the drops in German, Irish and English Americans, there was a rise in those who reported 'American' ancestry would account for the 'disappearance' of the those previous ancestries. I guess people are starting to loose their ancestral identities.
  • The Social Security Administration in 1984 might have included women who have a maiden name of Smith, but took on their spouse's last name.
