The MSM on the new math/gender study.
when i looked at cross-cultural data the proportion of women in math professions varied a lot. in places like mongolia where men are discouraged from higher education there was parity. but an important point was this: in all the countries i found data for [mostly EU, but some like mongolia, et.] the males were most well represented in mathematical/mechanical sciences, far less in other "high prestige" domains such as law and medicine. the ratio might have varied, but the rank order remained pretty invariant. norm of reaction? i also added the mechanical part because i noticed that mechanical engineering was often more male than mathematics, so it isn't just math aptitude here.
Is the M/F ratio for Asians like Chinese and Tamils closer to one? I always got the impression that the West had the most exaggerated variance for males.

no shit, since in medicine, law a non-mathematical sciences women are already more than 50% of the graduates now! ;-)
What in the world is a non-mathematical science? Do you mean social sciences? Even biology needs math, often in addition to just basic statistics.
How's the male/female ratio for non-health science biologists(such as population ecologists, cell biologists or geneticists)?

Among white 11th-graders, there were twice as many boys as girls above the 99th percentile?that is, at the very top of the curve. (Asians, however, showed a very slight skew toward females above the 99th percentile, while there were too few Hispanics and blacks scoring above even the 95th percentile to compute their gender ratios.)
Why is the trend not the same for other ethnicities? What's up with the Asians?

Expel the 7R?
I wonder what about the 7R allele in South Asians and West Asians? They did any study?
The benefits of the bad: they “hit it” (males at least)
But how likely is it that free market eugenics will result in asexual males?
Well, once genetic modification becomes commonplace, the variance of human behaviours would increase... you would have folks choosing to use "get rid" of inequality derived from our biology. For example, instead of a feminist complaining about women lagging behind in academia, she could engineer her daughters with the male brain, and drive, and the personality to match it. If a guy believed "making himself less shallow" really wanted to care about a girl's personality rather than her looks, he could tweak his brain to be purposely that way.
It will open up way more choice.
Ironically, the leftist academic denial of evo psych won't help society reaching equality, but finding the biological bases of the inequality will. Biotech will be able to change it.
Sure I bet the general public wouldn't be eager to get rid of traditionalist norms so fast but the variance of lifestyles would increase dramatically.
ie. Look at how much variance in lifestyle there is now compared to 200 years ago, 1000 years ago. From luddite hippies to nerdy Asperger's syndrome hackers, I've sure the variance in lifestyles will increase way more, as people have more control not just over memes but genes.

I hope one day biologically and psychologically we can transcend our petty bad-boy-loving instincts and gold-digger tendencies (for girls) and sex-craziness (for guys) and transhumanism allows us to destroy the facets of evolutionary psychology and gender inequality we hate!
I think you guys on this thread should honestly think about what you would do if every woman wanted you. Can you HONESTLY say that you would remain a monogamous paragon of virtue and eschew promiscuity?
Yes.
Yes.
East Asian psychometric variance
What about South Asians? When talking about Asian successes, wouldn't the same question about East Asians vs. the west apply to them too?
But South Asians aren't as conformist as East ones.

Sheep herders are not sheep???
Baa baa black sheep, have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full.
One for the master,
One for the dame,
And one for the little boy
Who lives down the lane.

Teenagers: innocent, or evil?
But "maturity" in accepting social norms is a subjective value. I remember on some political quiz there was a question: Do you think making peace with the "establishment" is a sign of maturity?
Eg. Is the stereotypical young idealist who defies social norms (especially if the social norm is unfair) because it goes against his beliefs less mature than the stereotypical geezer who just accepts the status quo and concerns himself with more practical affairs.
You could argue both ways.
A youngster is more likely to be a irrational thief and bandit but a youngster is also more likely to be a heroic soldier or firefighter that risks their life for an older person that may not do the same thing.

Males as a gamble, etc., at the APA
Hermaphrodites may be vulnerable to invasion by cheaters that only act as males, if males invest less in the offspring.
(The strategies actually observed in hermaphrodite taxa are all over the place, sometimes individuals compete to be males, sometimes femaleness is preferred, sometimes there are mutual enforcement strategies to cut down cheating. That makes it hard to test this idea. But I think intensified sexual conflict may be one reason why all organisms aren't hermaphrodites.)
Wouldn't the best strategy, theoretically speaking, be an organism that is both hermaphrodite and also capable of asexual cloning? you can act like a male, or act like a female...., or if you can't find a mate, self-fertilise/clone as a last resort?
eg. are some plants like this?
Perhaps there's a physiological constraint on this so few animals can do this?

Climate and civilization follow-up
just noticing that the Tigris-Euprates, Nile, Indus etc... are all in arid places, and early civilized states started there rather than say, the Elbe or the Rhine....
Maybe seasonality is also important I guess, wet and dry, flooding and harvesting.... not just in places that are continuously wet....
Yeah, but they also happened to be in lush river valleys within arid, desert places.... I mean the initial civilizations didn't seem to develop that much along river valleys in jungles, forests etc.. in places that are already very rainy and wet (except maybe in China I think)....
Also, another thing? How does aridity influence civilization, productivity as well? It seems all the early civilizations from Egypt, Indus, the Fertile Crescent etc... are all arid and dry...
is dryness good for civilization because insects like to come out in wet, humid lands?
How about South-east Asia.... more wet than South Asia?

These climates are tropical, humid subtropical, similar to some of the North Indian areas, it seems on the map?

Nerds
I wonder what might be the cause of the differing attitudes towards nerds in Asia and North America?
