What accounts for the prominence of "romantic love" in people's mating strategies in modern Western societies? I don't know, a fit of mass stupidity?

"Romantic Love" is a fleeting feeling. The things that make partnerships last long term are boring psychic/socio-economic compatibility criteria. But you can't keep a multi-billion dollar entertainment industry alive on fantasies of "compatibility" can you?

The four culture model of American history
It would be interesting to see a county-by-county map of Alabama, to see if his support was stronger in the northern upland parts of the state. Most of the states listed (except Oklahoma) are upland south states.
It is also ironic that these areas of the south were the most pro-union during the civil war, but that has as much to do with climate (most of them were too cold to grow cotton, tobacco , or any of the other slave-friedly crops) than with ethnic Scots-Irish culture.

The intesting question is why northern/upper- midwestern rural whites do not share the views of their southern counterparts..

I find it interesting that mindless gossip about Other extended families isn't possible in Bangladesh. In my Mother's family, a small new england town, my mother knows about just about every family in that town for 4 generations and will talk with her sister and sister-in-law for hours about who broke her hip, who's kid got arrested, who's marrying who, who had an affair, who went bankrupt, etc. In non-mobile places, other families can serve the same purpose as people inside the family.
