Can you smell sweat?
In my youth I briefly had a Japanese gf who, uh, really enjoyed nuzzling into my armpit. It was curious back then, but even more so now.
Twins Reunited
My identical twin is probably thinking that the real crime is locking the results of the research up for another 60 years.
Resources, resources
I have read large chunks of books on Amazon by searching the page numbers as I go along. I don't know if it still works, and they eventually cut you off arbitrarily, but it has worked well for me in the past.
It would be nice if google offered an iTunes style payment option to read through the books for which a limited preview is available. I won't hold my breath though...

Heavenly metaphors….
Thanks for this Razib.
It has been a few decades since I read the Chinese masters. I remember being impressed by some of what they wrote though. Nowadays I find myself frequently wondering how or what I would be thinking were I have been born in some other era and culture.
Many of those marginally alive Chinese peasants of Xun Zi's day would be quite successful in my society though...

Genius X Ignorance = Dumb Dyson
That reminds me of the time David Deutsch was pwned here by a local.
The end of farming?
Ahh...to recall those transient, whimsical, bondings of my youth.
Definitely used to be a hunter-gatherer, now in more of an agricultural-type of arrangement.
I guess this is because I reaped what I sowed...

Ben Barres strikes again!
Stephen, I'm sorry, I thought you might be willing to discuss the issue brought up by p-ter and others. Your unwillingness to do so leads me to believe that you understand that they are in fact right. You seem to be proving his point.
Stephen,
Do you disagree with the statement that homosexual transexuals are especially suited to prostitution?

Yikes. It appears that Barres might belong more in the political science department than anywhere else.
Ignoring evidence, anecdotal and otherwise, s/he shouts oppression, prejudice and white privilege as the sole possible explanations for the apparent abundance of minority transgendered prostitutes.

I really didn't like the way that Barres weighed in in that recent Bailey NYT piece as simply "a Stanford neurobiologist" rather than a "transgendered Stanford neurobiologist," or something.
Of course he has an agenda, which shouldn't be withheld from readers.

New Steven Pinker interview
I'm with neandertal. (We may in fact even be close enough to share the same socks...)
Somewhere around the beginning of April, I propose that GNXP challenge Mr. Schneider to the infamous, often challenged, yet widely read, and occasionally villified -- although admittedly not by people who exibit the rationality lauded on this site (and who, in fact, on occasion, often arrive with an agenda wrapped in the very language that would appear, prima facie, to place equal value on rigidly upholding accepted (academically) scientific methodology in their statements while at their core (if, indeed, one can actually identify a so-called "core," as such, being quite the opposite) -- to a series of ten questions.
(Sincere? Intelligent? Perhaps not...)

The Bailey article
At least you folks are not arguing nature vs. nurture.
I was talking about that poor kid who got his penis burned off during circumcision.
I found a reference to it here.
Very similar experience to Matthew's.

Thanks Matthew. I had read about a case just like yours, famous I think, and was going to bring it up.
Skull Shape-Shifters
I always assumed my head was a product of my ancestor's hybridization with HR Giger's aliens. When predator eventually wiped them out the only remaining evidence was the shape of our heads and our bad breath.
Has anyone looked into the the way they took care of their infants? Putting them to sleep on their backs or their sides makes a big difference in head shape.

The impulse to prefer now to then?
I meant the possible fMRI studies of the section of the brain that specifically controls for impulse and time preference.
Economists would then have to take notice. But they would probably find a way not to.

...and of course that is if the studies do show a biophysical difference between populations.
...sis...
Yes, this will be extremely interesting. As time preference is one of the backbones of economic development, showing (with video) that populations differ in the hardwiring for this particular department should cause more than the usual amount of very peculiar and tortured exegenis to explain away...
Taboo questions and the internet
Hi Zoe,
Another question for you since you seem to be active in this subject. Is there an obvious racial component to transexualism (that isn't cultural)?
Minorities seem to be the majority, but maybe the majority is all in the closet.

So you mean he wasn't, and it was just an idea that came into your head?
Zoe, I looked at your blog, and was struck by the amount of emotion expressed in your passport ordeal post, as well as your vow of retribution to those involved.
I am wondering about hormones.
If TS individuals do exhibit an IQ similar to what you have reported and are computer science/engineering types (aspergers?) the combination of artificial hormones could cause some interesting situations.
Perhaps a large part of this animosity towards Bailey is driven by hormones.

Zoe, this whole conversation is peculiar to me in the way that praise and wrath seem to be handed out in the same sentence in nearly equal amounts. It is like the fact that the book or author was both nominated for an award and vilified by the same or similar people.
Anecdotally, I once watched a TS individual throw a super-size cup of cola at someone in a shopping mall. I didn't see what brought on this response, but I always thought that hormone pills must have been involved too.
Do TS people take hormone pills that affect their behavior? Historically, that would not have been the case.

This is very interesting indeed Zoe. Could you take a stab at what portion of TS are "on the autistic spectrum?"
Zoe, I must admit that misinterpreted your first comment. The reviews you cited were so positive I couldn't figure out exactly what you were trying to say.
If your conjectures about IQ are even close to being correct, this is indeed extremely interesting.
Have you yourself contacted Bailey? Perhaps you could work on a follow up book with him.
Seriously.

So, an accurate summation of the book is that, by any measure, it is an outstanding book?
Those guys (gals?) were really after Steve Sailer for printing a good review of the Bailey book. For a while I think they had several sites near the top of a google "Steve Sailer" search.
Also, the author of the NYT piece included a quote from Ben Barres that was critical of Bailey. For some reason they forgot to mention that Ben used to be Barbara. I wondered if the journalist didn't know this, or was purposely withholding the information. In this case it is relevant.
