Nevermind the fact that we really don't know what the typical "paleolithic" diet was. Modern-day hunter-gatherers exploit wild starch sources and there is no reason why paleolithic ones couldn't.

Gruels made from cereal and fish sauce were far more consequential to the Italian peasant for thousands of years 
 
1) Fish sauce (garum) was a high-class food, Roman peasants could only dream of having something with that much flavour. 
 
2) It stopped being produced after the decay of the Roman Empire. 
 
3) You wouldn't dump it into your gruel.
