Why Eurasians aren’t very pale
My two daughters by my Japanese (now ex-) wife are both have her skin color. So far, only the elder has children (husband is like me of blond, blue-eyed northern European ancestry), but only one of the three (fourth coming soon) has any obvious signs of Asian ancestry: facial structure somewhat Asian, complexion about halfway between that of mother and father. Of the other two, one has brown eyes and hair, with no more than perhaps a very slight hint of Asian eye structure, the other is blond with grayish-hazel eyes and looks completely northern-European. It will be interesting to see how the fourth turns out.
Are doctors this clueless?
The low carb health plan advocate, Michael Eades, calls these doctors "statinators" and rails against statins all the time. With Pfizer leaving the cholesterol/blood sugar research market, maybe it is some sort of acknowledgement that these statins don't work in improving actual health and may actually cause some harm?
French more fecund than the Irish?
Inscrutable bunch, the French.
Apparently not. Looking at the bump in TFR, they seem to be very scrutable, surmountable and very pregnable. :)

Education and Ethnic Groups in Britain
Your quote:
"The proportion of children getting 'good' GCSE's in key subjects like English and mathematics has actually fallen slightly."
Please, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
Public education authorities in the U.S. have also worked hard to fudge and cheapen the statistics.

The genetics of normality
Then we can understand this "evolutionary phenomena"..

I cant believe that every discussion these days has evolution as the reason. Its like a new religion.
Hmmm... why do we believe in fairies? .. Evolution my dear...

Not sexual charity
To paraphrase Henri, there is no need for people to guess at the motives and beliefs of these (liberal Western) men towards (Southeast Asian) women. Just ask them; they'll tell you. 'Otherness' does indeed help to objectify and degrade.
I was in the Marines once and never had a chance with southeast asian woman if she is not a paid pro.
I've been stationed in Vietnam, Philippines and Japan. No luck with non-pro women in Vietnam and Philippines, but I had lots of luck in Japan. Oh, the Japanese women, I have fond memories of them.

Pter, I am so mad that despite the years we women spent on feminism, the years we worked our butt out to get 75 cents for every dollar a male monkey gets, you had the spunk to equate rape of our bodies to the equivalence of food bartering.
I hate you!!!

The Elf vs. Cosma
What is it with economists and discussions of IQ? First, it we DeLong going nuts on his comment thread. Now Tyler Cowen has taken down the whole thread after getting schooled claiming that there were too many nasty comments.
The demographics of top law professors
BTW, Volokh posted some followup posts about gay women related to the earlier post.
Lead, Crime, and a decent newspaper article on methodology
Oops. A quick visit to google falsifies my theory of lead based paints not taking hold in India. It is apparently far worse than it used to be in the US. I do remember that traditional red pigments such as sindur were made from even more poisonous mercury, but not lead. However, the vast majority of white paints used to be made from lime. You can go even today to older homes and flake off the white lime paint layers with a knife or sometimes fingernails.
Sort of off topic. Eugene Volokh talks about the overrepresentation of Jews and Asians at the heights of the legal academy. Traditional paints in India used to be based on slaked lime. I am not sure if lead based paints took hold there. I wonder what the story is in East Asia.
Intercourse and Intelligence
A little off base with the "more likely to visit a hooker = definately a lot less cautious" mumbo jumbo. If you want to, check the numbers from St. James Infirmary in SF(only hooker run clinic in the nation, for sex workers), they've found that most of the people in the sex work industry 1. never tell their primary care providers their line of work(explaining all the skewed numbers from hospitals in general, only crazy crackheads go in to the ER screaming "IM A HOOKER") and 2. Have a MUCH LOWER(30% lower) rate of STD infection than the general population. Thus it could ACTUALLY be inferred that the higher IQ people were, in fact, being more cautious when visiting a hooker, both from the disease perspective and from the perspective of not becoming attached, and being able to continue on with their work....
Overseas books
When I first came to the US, I had brought along my textbooks from India. These were legally published by McGraw-Hill India or equivalent Indian edition etc. As John mentioned, they had bad covers, absorbent flimsy paper, black and white pictures where the original US hardcover edition might have had nice glossy paper, color pictures etc. I once had the unfortunate occurrence of trying to get an autograph from a prof on his book and the staff there trying to shoo me away politely because they thought the book was bootlegged.
In any case, I recommend Indian editions of science and engineering books. I am less sure of the more esoteric books.

Interesting twist in the Sullivan-Harris debate
And thus spoke the greek polytheist to the monotheist: the dream of your new abstract deity will never work. People have grown up with real gods, they will never understand this newfangled bland tradition-free monotheism.
Pinker on consciousness
Why should processing information [in a certain way] 'feel' like anything?
Maybe this is a question similar to "why is there gravity?".

Religion is merely a contemporary issue?
One reason why religions work: they are old. They have this patina of "holyness". Try and start a religion now.
There are other reasons (human nature, group dynamics, teaching chilren belief is wise & "good") and I don't think it's hard to explain why religions work.

And what is with the bindi? I thought the Madonna inspired style went away a long time ago?
No compulsion?
but rather by the slow but inevitable wheels of liberalism grinding away at the edifice of medieval social control.
This might happen in the long run, but as we know, we are all dead in the long run anyway. But more to the point, I think it will get worse in the short term before it gets better. Most of the Muslim world was illiterate and not very aware of how Islam worked in the center of gravity of the Islamic world - the Arabian peninsula. Now with greater literacy, they are trying to ape them and follow the fundamentalist texts rather than the more liberal Islam their older societies followed. The practice of this more strict (authentic?) Islam might make them see the light and make it more liberal. On the other hand it might not, if the example of Afghanistan has any validity for the wider Islamic world. Afghanistan was rid of the Taliban and has had an opportunity to liberalize. But it does not look like it is happening. Maybe it is not happening because the ouster of the Taliban was not indigenous.

Malaysia had earlier converted a famous Malyasian Hindu mountaineer in death from Hinduism to Islam. They claimed that he had converted on his deathbed, but his widow denied that. Malaysia's top court ruled that it could not override the Islamic court's decision that the "conversion" had happened. They took his body and gave him an Islamic funeral against the wishes of his widow who wanted him to have a Hindu cremation.
