Fat people on flights
Of course, babies or children ought to get a discount if we're doing weight based pricing. So maybe it is a wash.
In my country, we have problem
Now the problen is just that you need to know which folks are the muslims. Since quotas (like for segregated planes) lead to higher prices - basic economic theory - few muslims will volunteer to pay the extra money to sign up for the exclusive seat on the muslim plane, even if "allowed to fly on segregated planes".
So you can't make it voluntary - are we back to the armbands and tattoos?
Of course, we'll have to make sure no-one born a muslim can convert to christianity - that would just be an easy way to poke a hole in "homeland security" big enough to fly a passenger jet through. And if you are - what - 1/8th muslim you are on "the list" and can never get off it?
Is it just me who sees how ridiculous all this insecurity, fear, and paranoia is.
Digit ratio predicts sport performance in female twins
This is a very common error in media discourse. A worse, but related error was uttered recently by 60 Minutes' Leslie Stahl. During her profile of Michael Bailey's work on homosexuality, she said something to the effect of: "Researchers have long looked to genes to explain homosexuality, but now are looking to statistics." (Idiotic emphasis hers)
Hot pepper consumption
I think it protects against stomach cancer. Cancer rates in South India (where they eat a lot of hot spices) is lower than other places. However, I dont have a link for this and I may have gotten it wrong.
An end to affirmative action?
As the article points out, political parties in Malaysia are race-based. The policies illustrated were implemented to ensure support for the party. It also encouraged a "them against us" seige mentality. The implementation, whatever the original aimes, leaves a lot to be desired. With globalisation the ability to compete will be severely hampered with a quota based non-competetive environment that the politicians have created here. This is not unlike the large government money losing subsidised companies that are found in some economies. Dr M is changing things because he's leaving and he does not want future generations to look back and point him out to be the main reason why Malaysia lags behind. Times have changed but I dont think we can now change our mindset. Its going to take a long time and the politicians can only see as far as the next election.

Is this a picture of Jennifer Beals? What's her genotype?
China, odds & ends
Here's a paper that suggests that there is no difference between Northern and Southern Chinese http://www.genome.uci.edu/onlinejournals/ding_china00.pdf
If it were so-if only….
The Chinese in Malaysia did not come to work in rubber plantations. They were involved mainly in tin mining. They are perceived to located in the urban areas. The Indians were brought in as labourers to work in the rubber plantations and to build railways, roads etc. The difference is that the Indians were brought in or encouraged to come to Malaysia by the British. It would stand to reason you bring in people who would be easier to control. Futhtermore the British controlled India at the time. The British however had nothing to do with the Chinese. In fact they were suspicious of them and they dealt with them differently. When it was clear to the British that their time was up, they preferred to hand over the administration to the Malays. To this end they set up special schools to educate them. The Chinese had their business but the Indians........
